US Postal Service head Louis DeJoy is stepping down, effective at an unspecified time. His departure comes after nearly five years in office, marked by challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic and efforts to reduce losses through cost cuts.
DeJoy, who took the helm in 2020 during President Donald Trump’s term, has overseen a 10-year plan to modernize operations and improve finances. Critics have raised concerns about the impact of consolidation on mail delivery services, particularly in rural areas.
DeJoy had previously suggested that postal customers would face “uncomfortable” rate hikes as part of the effort to stabilize finances. However, he disputed criticism that consolidation slowed service and instead touted investments in facilities and changes aimed at improving mail delivery speed.
The US Postal Service has also seen spikes in mail-in ballots during presidential elections, including the 2020 election. In 2020, a federal judge limited one cost-cutting practice after finding it contributed to delays in mail delivery.
DeJoy’s letter to the Postmaster General Board of Governors announced his intention to step down and facilitate a transition.
