Louisville men’s basketball secured its first 20-win season since 2019-2020 by defeating Notre Dame 75-60 on Sunday. The victory earned the Cardinals a first-round bye in next month’s conference tournament.
Terrence Edwards Jr., a 22-year-old freshman, led the team with 14 points, three rebounds, and two assists in his most crucial game yet. Edwards welcomed a baby boy, Terrence Edwards III, over the weekend, but chose to prioritize the game. He was energized by his girlfriend’s encouragement.
“Every game is winning time,” Edwards said. “We know we have to turn it up around that time.” Coach Pat Kelsey praised Edwards’ performance, saying he’s a wonderful human being who will be an unbelievable dad.
The Cardinals took an 18-point lead in the first half but allowed Notre Dame to get within three points at halftime. Louisville responded with a 13-0 run and maintained its lead throughout the second half. The Irish struggled from beyond the arc and committed seven turnovers after halftime, ultimately securing their place in the tournament.
Edwards’ performance was overshadowed by that of teammate Reyne Smith’s 100th career three-pointer, joining Taquan Dean and Preston Knowles as only the third player to achieve this feat. The victory marked coach Pat Kelsey’s 20-win season and earned him a spot alongside Louisville legends John Dromo and Denny Crum.
The Cardinals will take a five-day break before facing Florida State on Saturday at the KFC Yum! Center.
