Identical twins Hugo and Ross Turner embarked on a 12-week experiment to determine whether a low-carb or low-fat diet is better for strength, fitness, and aesthetics. To make it scientifically sound, sports scientists from the University of Loughborough monitored their progress.
The brothers followed different diets – Hugo consumed a high-fat meal plan with foods like olive oil, butter, nuts, eggs, and avocado, while Ross stuck to a balanced diet with higher carbohydrate intake. Both ate 3,500 calories daily, but Ross got his carbs through pasta and rice, avoiding fats.
Study results showed that Hugo’s strength increased by 59% due to the fat-rich diet, while Ross gained 56%. However, Hugo experienced fatigue during intense exercise despite gaining more muscle mass. In contrast, Ross lost less fat but performed better in cardiovascular tests.
Researchers note that a balanced intake of protein, carbs, and fats is essential for daily activities. The twins suggested adjusting diets before specific activities – upping carbohydrates for high-intensity exercises like cycling or running, and opting for higher fats during slower-paced activities like walking.
