The LPGA has updated its gender policy for competition eligibility, effective with the 2025 season. A working group of experts developed the new policy, which prioritizes the competitive integrity of women’s professional tournaments and elite amateur competitions. The policy states that athletes assigned female at birth are eligible to compete, while those assigned male at birth after puberty may not.
The updated policy aims to provide opportunities for all athletes, regardless of sex, in individual competitions categorized as “women’s events.” However, for open events where any player can participate, the policy requires eligibility based on sex assigned at birth and hormonal levels post-puberty. The LPGA Commissioner stated that the new policy reflects a science-based approach to ensuring fairness and competitive equity while being inclusive of all athletes.
