Luca Guadagnino is set to direct a new biopic, Artificial, about the tumultuous period at AI company OpenAI in 2023. The film follows CEO Sam Altman’s ousting and reinstatement after safety concerns and reports of abusive behavior surfaced.
Guadagnino joins forces with producers David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford, as well as scriptwriter Simon Rich and potential producers Jennifer Fox and Monica Barbaro. Sources indicate that Andrew Garfield is in talks to play Altman, while Monica Barbaro and Yura Borisov are eyed for roles as Mira Murati and Ilya Sutskever.
This project marks Guadagnino’s third collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios, following After the Hunt and Challengers. Guadagnino was previously set to direct DC’s Sgt. Rock, but that film’s plans were scrapped due to “daylight issues.” Now, Artificial is poised to start production before Guadagnino’s original project.
