Vivian Spohr, the wife of Deutsche Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr, was involved in a fatal car accident in Sardinia, Italy, on Tuesday. According to local media reports, Vivian Spohr, 51, was driving an SUV through a crosswalk when it collided with a pedestrian. Gaia Costa, 24, from Tempio Pausania, died at the scene due to serious head injuries.
Vivian Spohr initially drove away after realizing what happened, but was stopped by passers-by. Authorities are investigating whether she may have been distracted by her cell phone while driving. In a statement issued on Friday, Vivian Spohr expressed “dismay and deep sorrow” for the accident and stated that she would cooperate with the investigation.
Vivian Spohr had been staying at her family’s vacation home in Sardinia when the accident occurred. She returned to Germany shortly after the incident. The Lufthansa group, which has over 100,000 employees and made $1.5 billion in profits last year, is reportedly unaware of Vivian Spohr’s involvement in the accident.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing, with local authorities continuing to gather evidence and speak with witnesses.
