Lufthansa flight LH453, a regularly scheduled service from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Munich Airport (MUC), made an unscheduled diversion to Boston Logan International Airport on April 23rd. The Airbus A380 aircraft was carrying 461 passengers at an altitude of around 35,000 feet when air traffic control and the cockpit crew jointly decided to divert the flight due to concerns about a damaged lithium-ion tablet.
The decision came after recent high-profile incidents involving lithium-ion batteries catching fire on flights. Lufthansa Technik team subsequently removed and inspected the damaged device at Boston Logan International Airport. Although the diversion added several hours to the flight schedule, aviation authorities prioritize passenger safety above all else.
LH453’s departure was originally scheduled for 17:30 PST on April 23rd, but it arrived in Munich three hours behind schedule at 16:40 CEST. The flight resumed its original route from Los Angeles International Airport to Munich Airport after completing the necessary inspection.
