Dallas Mavericks fans are still reeling from the team’s trade of star player Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this month. In an apparent gesture of goodwill, Doncic paid for his former fans’ parking near the Crypto.com Arena in downtown LA before the team’s first game against the Lakers.
A sign was posted on Tuesday reading “FREE PARKING” and “Courtesy of Luka,” which is a surprising move from the young player who has been met with intense criticism from Mavericks fans. The trade, which sent NBA champion Anthony Davis to Dallas for Doncic, sparked widespread protests and anger among fans.
Mavericks fans have been vocal in their disappointment, taking to social media and protesting outside the American Airlines Center. The situation became so volatile that the team had to police fan behavior during a game on February 10, after the crowd booed security for removing a sign that read “Fire Nico.”
