Luka Doncic Signs 3-Year, $165M Max Deal with Lakers

Luka Doncic has agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, bypassing free agency next summer to build a long-term future with his new team. The deal keeps Doncic with the Lakers through 2028.

Doncic had a player option for the 2026-27 season under his previous contract but chose to re-sign instead. “Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud,” he wrote on social media.

Lakers President of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka said, “Today is a monumental moment for our franchise. Luka Dončić’s future is with the Los Angeles Lakers.” He praised Doncic as one of the game’s most transcendent players, citing an immediate connection between Doncic and the fanbase since his arrival.

Doncic joined the Lakers in February after being traded from the Dallas Mavericks, where he averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.7 rebounds per game last season alongside LeBron James. He played a key role in convincing veterans Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart to join the team.

Doncic’s commitment to the Lakers is also evident in his offseason conditioning work, which has been well-documented after rumors of him being uncertain about his physical commitment to basketball reportedly led to his departure from the Mavericks.
