Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been discharged from hospital after undergoing emergency surgery for a brain bleed. The 79-year-old appeared at a news conference alongside his medical team, thanking God for his recovery. Lula was taken to hospital on Monday after complaining of a severe headache and underwent a craniotomy to treat the bleeding.
The brain bleed was caused by a blow to the head sustained in October when he fell in his bathroom. Doctors said the president was in stable condition after surgery and is conscious, with no reported brain injury or after-effects. Lula is expected to return to the capital, Brasilia, next week if everything goes well.
Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin took on some of the president’s commitments while he was in hospital. Lula had previously cancelled his trip to Russia for a Brics summit due to the fall and had returned to full duties days later after receiving medical advice.
