Rapper Lupe Fiasco is taking his passion for hip-hop education to new heights. The 42-year-old artist has been appointed as a professor of hip hop at Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute, starting in fall 2025.
Fiasco will join the faculty alongside visionary Professor Wendel Patrick and teach rap as part of a groundbreaking four-year hip hop degree program. He expressed his excitement about contributing to the legacy of one of America’s oldest music conservatories, which has produced renowned musicians.
As an adjunct professor at MIT and currently undergoing a fellowship at Yale, Fiasco will continue to pursue his research and teaching while expanding his reach in higher education. The news was met with praise from fellow artists such as Freeway, Robert Glasper, and Twista.
Fiasco’s recent activities include the release of his ninth album Samurai and a brief revival of his Child Rebel Soldier side project, which he plans to reboot within six months. He also recently dropped a freestyle over Radiohead’s track “Optimistic,” although the song was later taken down due to a cease-and-desist from the band.
The rapper joked about the decline of supergroup PUSHEEN, attributing it to the excesses and ego of its members, stating that he struggled to keep the group on track. Despite this, Fiasco remains committed to spreading the message of hip-hop culture through education and his music.
