Prince Frederik of Luxembourg, 22, has died from a rare genetic disease called POLG Mitochondrial disease, his father Prince Robert announced on the foundation’s website. Born with the disorder, Frederik was diagnosed at 14.
Frederik’s family remembers him as strong and compassionate, leaving them with “some kind, some wise, (and) some instructive” farewells before he passed away. His father shared a heartwarming moment where Frederik asked if he was proud of him, despite not being able to speak for several days.
The youngest son of Prince Robert, 15th in line to the throne, was beloved by his family and friends. Siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Alexandre have praised Frederik’s strength and resilience. As a member of the Luxembourg royal family, he co-founded the POLG Foundation, a US-based charity that supports those affected by the disease.
There is no cure for POLG disease, which affects multiple organs including the brain, muscles, liver, and nerves. The disease, caused by mutations in the POLG gene, can have significant impacts on those affected.
