Luxembourg’s 69-year-old Grand Duke Henri announced his abdication on Christmas Eve, December 24, citing his son Prince Guillaume’s upcoming accession to the throne. This move follows in the footsteps of his late father Grand Duke Jean, who also stepped down on Christmas Eve in 1999 after a 36-year reign.
Grand Duke Henri, who has reigned since 2000, expressed gratitude for the progress made during his nearly 25-year tenure and acknowledged the challenges faced by Luxembourg. He emphasized the importance of solidarity and unity among its society, highlighting the nation’s ability to make targeted measures to ensure inclusivity.
Prince Guillaume, Prince Sébastien, Princess Alexandra, Prince Louis, and Prince Félix will inherit the throne, while Grand Duchess Maria Teresa will remain by his side. The official transition is set to take place on October 3, 2025, after Prince Guillaume’s recent appointment as Lieutenant-Representative of his father.
