Luxury Yacht Sunk Off Sicily Lifted from Sea After Salvage Operation

A British-flagged luxury superyacht, the 56-meter (184-foot) Bayesian, has been successfully lifted out of the water off the coast of Sicily as a complex salvage operation came to an end. The yacht sank on August 19, killing seven people, including tech mogul Mike Lynch and his daughter, as it was being treated to a cruise in celebration of his acquittal from fraud charges.

Lynch, who founded Autonomy and sold it to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, had been cleared of the charges by a US federal court jury in June 2024. The yacht sank during a violent storm near Palermo, with winds exceeding 70 knots (81 mph).

The salvage operation involved using eight steel lifting straps to raise the hull out of the water. The yacht was then secured and transported to a holding area on a yellow floating crane barge. Italian authorities are conducting a full criminal investigation into the sinking.

The recovered vessel will be made available for investigators to examine and help determine the cause of the sinking. A special steel cradle is waiting at the Sicilian port of Termini Imerese, where the yacht will be further examined before being transported to its final destination.
