Rideshare company Lyft is introducing a discount for customers who use its service into and out of Midtown and Lower Manhattan throughout January. The promotion coincides with the city’s congestion pricing program, which launched on January 5.
Lyft will offer $1.50 credit towards future rideshare or Citi Bike rides. This credit can be applied to riders’ accounts and is valid for a week. To qualify, trips must begin, end, or pass through the congestion relief zone south of 60th Street.
The discount aims to help riders adjust to the new fees associated with entering most of Manhattan. A $2.75 congestion fee has been in effect since 2019, with an additional flat $1.50 surcharge for trips into the congested area.
NYC rideshare users have mixed feelings about the discount. While some see it as a welcome relief, others believe it’s not enough. Some riders want incentives like free trips after a certain number of trips within the congestion zone.
However, many appreciate the discount, especially those who use Lyft frequently. For Queens resident Jim Bennet, every penny counts, and the $1.50 credit is a significant help.
