Lyle Menendez, one of two brothers convicted of murdering their parents in Beverly Hills in 1989, was denied parole by a California review board on Friday. The decision comes after his brother, Erik, was also denied parole on Thursday.
The brothers, now aged 57 and 55 respectively, have spent over 30 years behind bars. A panel of parole hearing officers evaluated them individually, finding that Lyle still poses a risk to the public due to anti-social personality traits. However, they acknowledged his remorse and noted that he has been a model inmate.
Lyle’s attorney claimed that he was driven by childhood sexual abuse at his father’s hands, while the prosecution argued that he shows no growth and continues to break rules behind bars. The brothers’ family said the decision is not the end of the road, as they will appear before the board again in three years.
Governor Gavin Newsom can review and potentially veto the decision, but will not be able to reverse it without independent action from the parole board’s recommendation standing on its own
