Rebel group M23 has taken control of a second airport in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The airport serves the city of Bukavu, which is the capital of South Kivu province.
M23 rebels and Rwandan troops moved into the area on Friday, meeting little resistance from local residents. The group claims the move was necessary to “eliminate the threat at the source.”
Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi has accused Rwanda of having “expansionist ambitions” in eastern Congo and called for international sanctions against Kigali. He made these comments during a visit to the Munich Security Conference.
The African Union is holding an emergency summit to discuss the conflict, which is expected to focus on finding a ceasefire. The summit will be held in Addis Ababa and attended by leaders from across Africa. Congo’s Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka will represent the country at the meeting.
