M23 Rebels Take Control of Bukavu, Spark Fears of Regional War

M23 rebels have taken control of the strategic city of Bukavu in eastern Congo, sparking fears of a wider war and exacerbating the country’s conflict. The rebel group, backed by Rwanda, has pledged to restore order and protect civilians.

The capture of Bukavu, a key commercial hub, followed a rapid offensive that left residents surveying the aftermath of widespread looting. Local authorities had withdrawn from the city to avoid fighting in densely populated areas, creating a power vacuum that led to theft and a prison break.

M23 fighters have promised to assist the population, who were “abandoned” by the army and allied troops. However, concerns remain about the group’s true intentions and the potential for regional instability.

The well-equipped rebel force has made significant gains, capturing more territory than all other rebellions since the end of two major wars in 1996-2003. This has also given them control over valuable mineral deposits, including copper, gold, tin, tantalum, lithium, tungsten, and coltan.

Congo’s government denies allegations that Rwanda is backing the group with arms and troops, while Rwanda claims it is defending itself against a Hutu militia threatening its borders. Congo instead accuses Rwanda of using proxy militias to loot its minerals.

As tensions escalate, fears of an all-out regional war grow. The international community remains vigilant, monitoring developments in the volatile region.
