M23 Rebels Take Control of Eastern Congo’s Strategic City of Bukavu

M23 rebels, backed by Rwandan troops, have advanced into the city of Bukavu in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, with little resistance from government forces. The Congolese government has accused Rwanda of ignoring calls for a ceasefire, while M23 denies being a Rwandan proxy.

The rapid advance of M23 rebels since the start of the year has fueled fears of a wider regional war, driven by long-standing tensions over power, identity, and resources. Bukavu’s capture deals a significant blow to Kinshasa’s authority in the region, with the city serving as a key commercial hub.

The situation appears largely calm, with verified footage showing M23 fighters parading and speaking to locals in central Independence Square. However, Congolese troops have withdrawn from the city to avoid fighting in densely populated areas, leaving a power vacuum that has triggered looting and a prison break.

M23’s control of Bukavu comes after taking the city of Goma in late January, with the rebel group seeking to seize key territory in the region. The Congolese government warns of potential human rights abuses and “serious crimes” under M23’s rule, while Rwanda rejects allegations that its troops are fighting alongside the rebels.

The region is home to significant mineral deposits, including cobalt, copper, and coltan, making it a critical interest for global powers. The humanitarian crisis in eastern provinces worsens with each passing day, leaving about 350,000 displaced people without access to basic necessities.

As the situation unfolds, diplomats and analysts weigh the implications of M23’s control over Bukavu, with Britain warning that the entrance of Rwandan troops is a “serious escalation” heightening the risk of regional conflict.
