The “M3GAN” cinematic universe might be shrinking. A sci-fi spinoff titled “Soulm8te,” which explores a man’s journey with an android to cope with his wife’s death, has been removed from Universal’s release calendar. The film was set for January 9 but will now be shopped around to other studios.
“Soulm8te” was meant to complement the success of “M3GAN,” a horror comedy about a murderous artificial intelligence doll. However, its sequel, “M3GAN 2.0,” underperformed with just $39 million at the global box office, despite a low production budget of $25 million. This decline in interest suggests that spinoff stories may not be the next logical step.
The film was written and directed by Kate Dolan, starring Lily Sullivan, David Rysdahl, and Claudia Doumit. Blumhouse founder Jason Blum and Atomic Monster founder James Wan produced it. The move comes as Blumhouse has had a relatively slow year at the box office, with only a few recent successes.
