Mac Jones Signs with San Francisco 49ers on Two-Year Deal

Former Patriots quarterback Mac Jones is set to revive his career with the San Francisco 49ers, signing a two-year deal worth $7 million. Jones had been released by the New England Patriots in 2023 after failing to regain his starting role following his trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jones initially rose to prominence as a starting quarterback for the Jaguars, going 2-5 with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions in seven starts. However, he became available on the free-agent market after suffering a poor ending with the Patriots.

The 49ers held interest in Jones during the 2021 NFL Draft but instead chose North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance. The decision did not pan out as expected, leading to a series of coaching changes that hindered Lance’s development.

Jones was drafted by the Patriots at No. 15 overall and enjoyed immediate success with a 10-win rookie season and a playoff appearance. However, his time in New England was marked by coaching instability, which led to a decline in his performance over the next two seasons.

The 49ers now have an opportunity to reassess their decision and give Jones another chance as a backup quarterback behind Brock Purdy. With this new deal, Jones will be able to revive his career and potentially bring stability to San Francisco’s quarterback position.
