UFC welterweight contenders Ian Machado Garry and Shavkat Rakhmonov broke the record for highest combined record between opponents in their highly anticipated fight at UFC 310. The bout, which was originally scheduled against Belal Muhammad, saw Rakhmonov withdraw due to injury.
Garry, who stepped in on three weeks’ notice, showed impressive defensive skills and grappling, but ultimately lost by unanimous decision. Despite the loss, Garry remains confident and believes he did not lose the fight.
“I don’t feel like I lost today,” Garry said at the post-fight press conference. “I came out and fought a giant, I showed that I can hang with the single best in the division and proved tonight that I can be a champion.”
The win marked Rakhmonov’s first title shot, while Garry remains undefeated at 15-0. The Irishman’s performance impressed Dana White, who praised both fighters’ skills.
“Sometimes fights don’t play out the way you expect them to, but with stakes this high, it was expected that we’d see great things from both guys,” White said. “I’m happy with both performances.”
