Mack Trucks Layoffs Hit Lehigh Valley Amid Market Uncertainty

Mack Trucks in Lower Macungie Township, Pennsylvania, is planning to lay off around 250-350 employees due to a slowdown in the heavy-duty truck market. The company blames market uncertainty about freight rates and demand, as well as potential regulatory changes and tariffs.

More than 2,600 people work at the Lehigh Valley plant, with approximately 10% of Mack Trucks employees affected by the layoffs. Shop chairman for Local 677, Timothy Hertzog, describes the situation as “not a good situation” due to the impact of tariffs on truck prices, causing customers to cancel orders.

Congressman Ryan Mackenzie attributes the company’s financial struggles to its reliance on government subsidies and previous plans to move jobs to Mexico. Siegel, State Representative Joshua, praises Mack Trucks’ significance in the Lehigh Valley community but acknowledges the devastating effects on workers. The layoffs are expected to occur over the next 90 days.
