Macron Pledges EU Support for Moldova Ahead of Parliamentary Poll

French President Emmanuel Macron has declared France’s “determined support” for Moldova, condemning Russian “lies” about European intentions. The pledge comes ahead of next month’s high-stakes parliamentary poll in the former Soviet republic.

Macron made the comments during a symbolic visit to Moldova, which borders Ukraine and is seeking EU membership. He was joined by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who expressed their support for Moldova’s independence and sovereignty.

The EU leaders met with Moldovan President Maia Sandu to celebrate the country’s 34th independence day, a day before campaigning starts. They also accused Russia of attempting to destabilize Moldova and undermine its EU ambitions.

Sandu has repeatedly warned of Russian attempts to influence the poll, including funneling $100 million in cryptocurrency into pro-Russian political forces. The three EU leaders will give speeches during official independence day celebrations on Chisinau’s Independence Square, with a concert concluding the evening.

The visit is seen as a show of support for Moldova and a symbolic message to Russia that top European countries care about its developments.
