Macron Proposes Partial Ukraine Truce with Britain

France and Britain are proposing a partial one-month truce between Russia and Ukraine that would not cover ground fighting. The truce, which covers air, sea, and energy infrastructure attacks, aims to reduce tensions without deploying European troops to Ukraine’s soil.

French President Emmanuel Macron revealed the plan during an interview with Le Figaro on Sunday as he flew to London for a meeting with European leaders. Under the proposal, negotiations would take several weeks before a peace agreement is signed, followed by a potential troop deployment.

Macron emphasized that his country and other European nations must increase defense spending, potentially up to 3% of their gross domestic product. The European Commission needs to be more innovative in financing defense spending, he said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed awareness of the plan, but details remain unclear.
