French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed US President-elect Donald Trump to the Elysée Palace in Paris ahead of the historic reopening of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was ravaged by fire five years ago. This is the first time a foreign leader has hosted Trump since winning the presidential election.
The visit marks Trump’s first trip abroad following the election and comes as around 50 world leaders are expected to attend the cathedral’s reopening. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will also meet with Macron, although the exact details of their meeting have not been confirmed.
Trump previously met with Zelenskyy at the end of September in New York, where they discussed the Russia-Ukraine war and Trump claimed he could resolve it in one day. Ukrainian officials have since met with Trump’s team, including his national security adviser and vice president-elect.
The visit comes as France’s government is still reeling from a no-confidence vote that led to the resignation of its prime minister. Macron has vowed to stay in office until 2027 and has sought to position himself as a mediator in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
