Macy’s Historic Center City Store Closes Forever

The Wanamaker building in Philadelphia’s Center City will close its doors for the last time on Sunday evening after being a iconic shopping destination for 114 years. The store, formerly known as Hecht’s, Strawbridge’s, and Lord & Taylor, has been home to the famous Wanamaker Organ, a beloved landmark that has drawn visitors with its beautiful music since 1904.

Many shoppers have expressed their sentimental attachment to the store, which is said to be an “old building” but “just so well constructed.” The iconic eagle statue outside and festive Christmas displays have become a cherished part of Philadelphia’s holiday tradition.

Some notable past connections to the location include famous actor Ryan O’Neal being spotted walking in 1985 and the movie “Mannequin,” which was filmed on site in the 80s.

The Wanamaker building has played host to many memorable moments, including the invention of the price tag.
