Magic: The Gathering has announced its latest video game collaboration, bringing together the popular Final Fantasy series with its card game. The Universes Beyond series will feature four new Commander Decks, each centered around a different Final Fantasy game: Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14. Wizards of the Coast revealed the commanders for each deck, which are the central protagonists of their respective games – Terra from 6, Cloud from 7, Tidus from 10, and Y’shtola from 14.
The new sets will include 100 cards, featuring reprints of existing cards with Final Fantasy art and some brand-new ones. Senior game designer Daniel Holt explained that the team chose to focus on one game per deck to delve deeper into its lore and capture beloved moments from each storyline. The choices behind the commanders were also discussed, with Cloud being a straightforward pick for Final Fantasy 7. However, other characters like Celes for 6 and Yuna for 10 were considered before ultimately choosing Y’shtola for 14 due to her popularity as a spellcaster.
