Magnus Carlsen Quits Chess Tournament Over Jeans Dispute

Norwegian chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen has left a tournament over a dispute about his jeans. According to the International Chess Federation, its rules prohibit players from wearing jeans at the event. When Carlsen was informed of the breach and fined $200, he refused to change. In a video posted on social media, Carlsen said he would change tomorrow if that’s okay but was told to do so immediately. He deemed it “a bit of a matter of principle.” Fellow participant Ian Nepomniachtchi was also fined earlier for wearing sports shoes but changed into approved attire and continued playing.
