Maine residents are in for a treat as the Lyrid meteor shower peaks next week. The shower is caused by Earth passing through the dusty trails left behind by Comet Thatcher, which will be visible nightly until April 26.
The peak activity is expected on the night of April 21-22, with the best viewing time just before dawn. Observers can expect to see up to 15 meteors per hour. If you miss this shower, don’t worry – more meteor showers are on the way throughout spring and summer.
In the meantime, mark your calendar for other notable meteor showers, including those from Comet Thatcher’s debris left behind by previous comets, which will be visible throughout the year.
