Major record labels Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group have canceled their Grammy Week events due to the devastating Southern California wildfires. The moves come after the Recording Academy announced plans to proceed with the 67th annual Grammy Awards telecast on February 2 as scheduled, despite the ongoing crisis.
Universal Music Group will redirect resources intended for its Grammy-related events to support those affected by the wildfires. “Our deepest gratitude goes to the first responders and emergency personnel who continue to perform heroically,” the company said in a statement. “L.A. is home to so many of us. We are committed to helping and supporting the music community, our artists, our teams and the people of Los Angeles get through this horrific episode.”
Warner Music Group has also canceled its Grammy Week party and will redirect funds to combat the wildfires and support relief efforts in the L.A. region. The company had previously announced a $1 million donation to support fire relief and rebuilding efforts.
The Recording Academy, which produces the Grammy Awards, has stated that it will proceed with the telecast on February 2 as planned, while also raising additional funds to support wildfire relief efforts and honoring first responders. Local authorities, including Mayor Karen Bass’s office, public safety agencies, and fire marshals, have been involved in coordinating the event.
Other major music industry events, such as the MusiCares Person of the Year event and the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards, remain unaffected at this time.
