Solo travelers are facing a surprise when booking flights with major US airlines. According to research by travel sites Thrifty Traveler and View From The Wing, American Airlines, Delta, and United are charging solo travelers significantly more than those traveling in groups.
In some cases, solo travelers can pay up to 70% more for the same flight. For example, a one-way ticket from Charlotte to Fort Myers on American Airlines costs $482 when booked alone, but drops to $333 when two people book together. Similarly, a one-way ticket from Chicago O’Hare to Lexington in Kentucky on American Airlines falls by 50% when the number of travelers is doubled.
Experts say that this pricing strategy can seem unfair, especially for solo travelers who often already pay more than those traveling with others. However, travel blogger Gilbert Ott argues that it’s essential to understand that seats are commodities and bulk discounts apply. He notes that airlines will continue to use personalized pricing as they leverage AI technology in the future.
The three major US airlines involved have declined to comment on this issue. However, travel site headforpoints.com describes the practice as “unfair” and emphasizes the need for solo travelers to be aware of these price differences.
