Malaysia has agreed in principle to resume the search for the wreckage of missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370, over 10 years after it disappeared. The decision comes after exploration firm Ocean Infinity proposed a new search area in the southern Indian Ocean.
The last attempt at finding MH370 ended in 2018, but Ocean Infinity will receive $70 million if they find substantial evidence of the plane’s wreckage. Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated that their commitment is to the next of kin and hopes this time will be positive for the families who have been searching for closure.
Debris from the aircraft has washed up in Africa and on Indian Ocean islands, with over 150 Chinese passengers on board. Relatives are demanding compensation from various parties involved. Malaysia initially left open the possibility that MH370 was deliberately taken off course, but further investigation is needed to determine the cause of the disappearance.
The new search area will focus on a specific region in the southern Indian Ocean, covering an area of 120,000 square kilometers. This follows an initial underwater search conducted by Malaysia, Australia, and China in 2018.
