Malaysia has resumed its search for the missing MH370 plane, which vanished over a decade ago. Maritime exploration firm Ocean Infinity is leading the hunt, with the Malaysian government agreeing to pay $70m if the wreckage is found and verified.
The search began in February 2024, with Ocean Infinity deploying ships to scour 15,000 sq km of the southern Indian Ocean. The plane, which disappeared on March 8, 2014, was carrying 12 crew members and 227 passengers. It last made contact with air traffic control 30 minutes after taking off from Kuala Lumpur airport.
The families of those on board are still seeking answers about what happened to their loved ones. Previous searches have yielded few results, with the Australian government ending its underwater hunt in 2017 after nearly three years.
Ocean Infinity has a “no-find-no-fee” basis for the search, and the Malaysian government will sign an 18-month contract if the wreckage is found. Theories about MH370’s disappearance range from pilot error to sabotage and conspiracies involving government agencies.
The resumption of the search brings relief to families who have been waiting for answers for years. “We just want to know where it is and what happened,” said Jaquita Gonzales, wife of MH370 flight supervisor Patrick Gomes.
