Malaysia is on the cusp of becoming an ageing society, with 15% of its population expected to be 60 and above by 2030. Protecting the health of older adults has become increasingly crucial. One effective tool for preventing serious illnesses and hospitalization is vaccination.
Despite low awareness about elderly immunisation, consultant geriatrician Dr Chin Ai-Vyrn dispels common myths. He states that vaccines are not a one-size-fits-all solution, but rather tailored to specific diseases such as influenza, pneumococcal disease, shingles, Respiratory Syncytial Virus, and Covid-19.
Vaccines strengthen the immune system by training it to recognize and fight pathogens, rather than overwhelming or weakening it. While most vaccines are safe with rare side effects, some may require boosters over time due to immunity waning. It’s essential to consult a doctor before getting vaccinated, especially if taking immunosuppressive medications.
Dr Chin emphasizes the importance of vaccination in preventing pneumonia, which is the leading cause of death in Malaysia, often triggered by infections like influenza. Vaccines act as an “insurance policy” for future health, helping the natural immune system stay alert and prepared to fight off serious infections.
A well-rounded lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, quality sleep, stress management, and good personal hygiene, also plays a critical role in maintaining the immune system and reducing morbidity and mortality. By addressing both vaccination and lifestyle habits, older adults can take proactive steps towards staying healthy as they age.
