Mali’s national dialogue has recommended naming junta leader Assimi Goita as president with a five-year mandate. The recommendation comes after a dialogue held in the capital Bamako, where political actors discussed possible reforms and future governance structures.
As part of these recommendations, all existing political parties would be dissolved, and new party creation conditions would be tightened. The proposed changes are expected to come into effect in the coming days.
Goita, 41, was elevated to five-star general rank in October 2024 after seizing power through coups in 2020 and 2021. He has been serving as “President of the Transition” since 2021.
The military leaders aim to establish stability in Mali, where jihadist groups have operated for over a decade following a Tuareg rebellion. They vow to combat insecurity in the country while pushing back the scheduled elections from February 2022.
