A national dialogue conference in Bamako, Mali’s capital, has recommended installing junta leader Gen. Assimi Goita as president for a renewable five-year term. The conference also suggested dissolving political parties and abolishing the status of opposition leaders.
According to Abdou Salam Diepkilé, director general of territorial administration, the talks involved over 400 regional delegates, representatives from Bamako, and Malian diaspora members. However, some political parties have denounced their participation in the conference, claiming they were not allowed to attend.
The junta’s rule has been marked by instability, with two military coups since 2020. Insurgency by jihadi groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group worsened the situation. The country has been suspended from all political activities since April 2024.
A new prime minister has yet to be announced, and no date has been set for a presidential election, which was initially promised for March 2024 but postponed later.
