Malik Beasley is no longer under investigation by the Eastern District of New York, according to his attorneys. The federal investigation was sparked by allegations that Beasley gambled on NBA games and prop bets during the 2023-24 season. However, after extensive conversations with investigators, Beasley’s lawyers say they have been determined not to be a target of the investigation.
Beasley had faced potential complications in free agency due to the investigation, including a three-year, $42 million contract proposal from the Detroit Pistons that was halted before it could move forward. Several teams had paused discussions about signing him as well.
Despite allegations against Beasley, he finished last season with impressive numbers, averaging 16.3 points and making a career-high 77 starts. He also set multiple franchise records for the Detroit Pistons, including most three-pointers made in a season.
The NBA has been scrutinized over player gambling, with former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter being banned after disclosing confidential information to sports bettors. Meanwhile, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is currently under federal investigation, but his lawyer says he is not a target of the investigation and faces no sanction from the league.
The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) has reiterated its support for tighter regulations on prop bets to minimize player harassment.
