Man Breaks Plane Window, Passengers Subdue Him with Seat Belts and Zip Ties

A Frontier Airlines flight from Denver to Houston was disrupted when a man started bashing a window, prompting passengers to restrain him until the plane landed. The incident occurred on Tuesday, about 40 minutes into Flight 4856, when the man broke the window’s inner pane and plastic frame. Passengers, including Army veteran Tanner Phillips, used shoelaces and zip ties to subdue the man until the authorities took over.

According to Phillips, his instincts kicked in quickly after flight attendants asked for help over the plane’s intercom. He said that another passenger gave him laces from their boots, and he tied the man’s wrists. The crew had also asked passengers with law enforcement or military experience if they could assist, as there was no air marshal on board.

The FBI is investigating the incident, which has added to a list of high-profile examples of air rage. In 2021, a Frontier Airlines passenger assaulted three flight attendants, while in 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration received over 2,100 reports of unruly passengers from airlines. The F.A.A. said that the recent uptick shows it continues to be a problem.
