Des Longstaff, a 39-year-old landscaper, received a devastating diagnosis of stage four esophageal adenocarcinoma after struggling to eat a bacon and sausage sandwich during Christmas Eve dinner. The tumor, over a foot long, has spread to his liver making treatment challenging. With an estimated 12 months to live, Longstaff is undergoing immunotherapy treatment to keep the cancer from spreading. However, doctors in Germany believe they can treat the cancer and give him five more years with his son.
Longstaff’s mother, Tracy MacCormiac, started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for her son’s treatment and potential travel to Germany, where they hope to find a cure. The family is optimistic about Des’ chances of overcoming the disease, but acknowledge the financial strain it will put on their lives.
