Man Seeks $700 Million Lost Bitcoin Fortune in Landfill Purchase

A man from Wales, James Howells, believes his $700 million lost Bitcoin fortune is buried in a landfill site. The 39-year-old claims that cryptocurrency on a hard drive containing his wallet was worth an estimated £620 million ($766 million) in 2013.

Howells has been fighting with local authorities for over a decade to be allowed to search for the valuable cryptocurrency after it accidentally ended up at a Newport garbage dump. The local council denied him access, citing that the site became their property once it entered the landfill.

However, the closure plan of the landfill in 2025-26, due to planning permission for a solar farm on part of the land, has come as a surprise to Howells. He recently lost a high court case where he asked the judge to force the council to either allow him to search the dump or award him $495 million ($612 million) in compensation.

Despite this setback, Howells is determined not to give up hope on his Bitcoin fortune and is considering purchasing the landfill site “as is.” He has discussed this option with investment partners and is exploring the possibility.
