Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Drugging and Raping Wife

A French man, Dominique Pélicot, 72, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for drugging his then-wife Gisèle Pélicot, also 72, and inviting dozens of men to rape her over nearly a decade.

Pélicot was found guilty of aggravated rape, attempted aggravated rape, and child abuse imagery, alongside 50 other men who were also sentenced after being given guilty verdicts for similar crimes.

The victims, including Gisèle’s children, testified about the devastating impact of Pélicot’s actions on their lives. Gisèle previously said she had lost 10 years of her life due to her husband’s abuse and that she would never find peace.

Pélicot confessed to his crimes in court, admitting he was a rapist, and claimed to have facilitated dozens of rapes at his home between 2011 and 2020. He had been drugging Gisèle’s food and filming the rapes for nearly a decade before being arrested in December 2020.

The victims described their father as a “monster” who had caused irreparable harm to their lives, while Pélicot’s own children testified that he had asked for forgiveness but was met with “never”. The case highlights the devastating impact of domestic violence and abuse.
