A Canadian man narrowly escaped being struck by a massive meteorite that impacted his home in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The event was captured on video by the homeowner’s doorbell camera, which later confirmed the object as a rare meteorite with no previous documented sightings. Researchers at the University of Alberta stated it was the first and only meteorite from PEI to crash to Earth, complete with an unusual sound. The man, Joe Velaidum, described how he almost felt the impact before it hit. He collected fragments for study and added them to the university’s meteorite collection.
The rare meteorite, called the Charlottetown Meteorite, was identified as an “ordinary” chondrite—a type of stony meteorite. It broke apart upon impact due to its composition. The incident raises questions about the odds of being hit by a meteorite elsewhere in the world. While there’s one confirmed US case from 1954 involving a grapefruit-sized rock, most cases remain unverified or are minor injuries.
Contributing researchers and officials provided insights into this unique meteorite event, highlighting its significance for understanding local space debris history.
