Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a crucial tool in personnel decisions, including hiring, promotions, raises, and terminations. A recent study by Resume Builder surveyed 1,342 US managers, revealing that nearly all of them are using AI to make various decisions impacting employees.
Most managers use AI for daily tasks such as training materials, employee development plans, performance assessments, and performance reviews. However, some managers also rely on AI for higher-stakes decisions like raises (78%) and promotions (77%). A significant portion (66%) have used AI when deciding who to lay off, and 64% even use it for terminations.
The degree of trust in AI decision-making varies significantly among managers. While 24% say they sometimes let AI make decisions without human input, another 20% allow it all the time or often. One-fourth of respondents have replaced a direct report with AI.
However, despite increasing reliance on AI tools, only one-third of surveyed managers have received official training on ethical AI use in the office. Experts warn that relying solely on AI can lead to flawed, biased, or manipulated outcomes, which organizations must mitigate to avoid legal liability and maintain trust among employees.
As AI continues to shape personnel decisions, it is essential for organizations to implement AI ethically and prioritize human judgment and empathy to ensure fair and effective decision-making.
