Manchester United staged a late comeback at Goodison Park, overturning a 96th-minute penalty decision that had given Everton a 2-0 lead. The Red Devils’ fightback was sparked by referee Andrew Madley’s decision to award the penalty after video assistant referee VAR advised him to review the incident.
United captain Bruno Fernandes curled in a 72nd-minute free-kick and Manuel Ugarte levelled for Manchester United just before stoppage time. However, the visitors were initially denied when VAR deemed that no foul had been committed during an incident involving Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire.
Everton took control in the first half, with Beto scoring from a corner and Abdoulaye Doucouré adding a second goal after a combination of Lindstrøm and Beto. United’s central midfield pairing were outplayed by their opponents, but the introduction of Alejandro Garnacho and Chidozie Obi improved the team’s attacking performance.
The game was in the balance until Fernandes scored his second free-kick, levelling the score at 2-2. However, Everton took a 3-2 lead with just minutes left on the clock when Beto headed clear of an Ugarte shot and the midfielder volleyed home.
But VAR intervened again, this time to deny United a clear goal. The decision saw David Moyes’ team frustrated by repeated VAR reviews, but ultimately denied them a win.
