Marburg Virus Outbreak Declared in Tanzania, 8 Dead

A suspected outbreak of Marburg virus disease has been declared in Tanzania, with eight deaths reported. The World Health Organization (WHO) informed Member States of the outbreak, which is currently classified as “high risk.” Healthcare workers are among those affected, and symptoms include headache, high fever, back pain, diarrhea, and bleeding.

The source of the outbreak remains unknown, but cases have been detected in two districts with significant cross-border population movement to neighboring countries. The WHO has expressed concerns about potential risks due to transportation networks in the region, including an airport that connects to the country’s capital.

This is Tanzania’s second reported outbreak since 1967, and the first occurred two years ago. The global threat level remains “low,” but the WHO warns of potential risks due to the region’s transportation connections.
