Marcus Ericsson Finishes Second at Indy 500, Disappointed After Close Call

Marcus Ericsson came close to winning the 109th Indianapolis 500 but fell short, finishing second behind Alex Palou by just .68 seconds. The 34-year-old Swedish driver led with 14 laps remaining before Palou took advantage of an opening in Turn 1 on Lap 186.

Ericsson expressed his disappointment and frustration after the race, saying “second is a good result, but here it’s not.” He attributed his struggles to navigating around lapped cars, which created dirty air that made it hard for him to overtake Palou. Ericsson plans to review footage to determine what he could have done differently.

Despite the setback, Ericsson praised his team for their efforts and acknowledged his own strengths as a self-critic. He said he would “beat myself up” over the loss but expected to bounce back in the next few days.

Ericsson’s IndyCar history suggests that he can rebound from a disappointing performance. He won the 2022 Indianapolis 500 and earned his sole podium appearance of 2024 at the Detroit Grand Prix, where he has consistently performed well.
