The Seattle Mariners have re-signed infielder Jorge Polanco to a one-year deal worth $7 million, with a vesting option for another year based on plate appearances. The total guaranteed money would increase to $7.75 million if the option is exercised in 2026.
Polanco, 31, will primarily play third base, which could see him return to the opening day lineup for the second consecutive season. However, his 2024 campaign was disappointing, with a career-worst strikeout rate and poor overall numbers due to injuries.
To mitigate the risks of Polanco’s health, the Mariners are looking to a player who can cover both second and third base positions as a big leaguer. With Polanco, Donovan Solano, and Dylan Moore on board, Seattle has three players who have shown they can play multiple infield positions over multiple seasons.
While the signing does not commit the team longer-term at the infield position, it highlights their confidence in their farm system’s ability to provide depth. The Mariners’ plan appears to be a juggling act between Polanco, Solano, and Moore, with potentially time-division Luke Raley at first base and some designated hitter work.
Polanco still brings significant value to the table, including reasonable plate discipline and decent power numbers, despite his poor overall performance last season.
