Mario & Luigi’s Brothership Title Explained

Nintendo has revealed that over 100 options were considered for the title of its latest Mario & Luigi game. The final title, “Brothership,” was chosen after brainstorming with Aquire. It incorporates the theme of brotherhood and references Shipshape Island.

Associate producer Tomoki Fukushima explained that the subtitle fits perfectly with the game’s theme, referencing the bond between brothers and incorporating the word “ship” from the island. This connection to Shipshape Island is also why the title was well-received by Nintendo’s North American and European colleagues, who noted its similarity to the phrase “mothership.”

While the exact options considered are not available, Fukushima acknowledged that the name for this game was positively received by many, including fans and colleagues alike. Some have praised the title as a clever play on words, while others think it fits well with the game’s theme.
