Carney plans to expand Canadian trade with Europe, Australia, and Asian democracies, blunting some of the economic damage from newly imposed US tariffs on cars, steel, and aluminum. While Carney’s win is seen as a victory for center-left politicians, his influence will be limited compared to former German Chancellor Angela Merkel or French President Emmanuel Macron. Nevertheless, Canada’s presidency of the G7 this year adds to Carney’s platform, providing an opportunity for him to shape global policies and promote Canada’s interests.
